Integrating education in Librarianship and Information Science : with special reference to library schools in Brazil and Latin America in general

In particular, the information services needed for development are creating a number of new needs. The paper concentrates on the relation between the subject of Librarianship, the subject of Information Science and the accomodation of Information Science in library education. The curriculum in library schools in Brazil and Latin America in general, is not oriented to a great extent to Information Science. Library education needs to take into account advances in Information Science because they provide new theoretical frameworks and new professional services. The emergence and domain of Information Science is discussed: (1) professional (applied, practical), (2) technological and (3) scientific (basic)Library education all over the world is under many pressures, which are enumerated.
