Mini- and micro-computers in information, documentation and libraries in Brazil : an overview

An overview of the Brazilian scenario on informatic is presented, with emphasis on the issues related to the mini- and micro-computer industry. And also, a broad description of the national policies for the sector along with the mechanisms aimed at strengthening the Brazilian hardware, software and information services industries. The main characteristics of the different types of equipment available are highlighted, as well as nationwide statistics on hardware distribution and utilization. This picture is enhanced by brief comments on the existing and planned application software for bibliographic information handling using Brazilian mini- and micro-computers. The national bibliographic database dissemination services are addressed, both the access to databases located abroad and in the country. Concluding, the national infrastructure in telecommunications is explored, especially the implementation of a package switching network, scheduled for the end of this year This network is expected to spread the use of Brazilian mini- and micro-computers in the country
