An attempt has been made to study two different methods of current awareness, a manual and a computerised system of selective dissemination of information. The main objective of the study was to identify the different features in each system so that a better choice could be made when planning and developing an SDI system for the National Institute of Weights and Measurement in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was thought that and SDI system should be developed within the Institute so that it would allow its library to better meet its users needs. This is because an SDI sevice seems to be of extreme necessity among the scientific community, since it can help them to have more information available. This point is particularly relevant especially, when recognising the important role information plays in the modern world, the increasing necessity of keeping well informed and the increasing growth and dispersion of the literature
