the need for adequate access to documents is greater than ever and the total volume of the world's plublications continues to grow. Improvements in bibliographic control in the last 10 years have insured both that a higher proportion of documents are covered by bibliographic tools and that access to the bibliographic references is better and faster. Brazil has followed this pattern and while its bibliographic access is improving day by day, documents they want to see but cannot obtain. The need for better document supply in Brazil is evident. Brazil is a big country with big problems. All levels of Brazilian population need different kinds of information, most of it contained in documents, that will allow it to help the country to cope with those problems. Document access relies more on interlibrary lending, because the great growth in the number and cost of publication is making libraries increasingly unable to provide their readers with all the publications they need. Interlibrary lending in Brazil is unbalanced
